Common Water Problems

We test for, and treat, water systems for the most common and frustrating water quality problems, including PFAS.

To make sure you have the best quality water possible, we offer water testing and water treatment services that include:

  • Water conditioning systems (water softeners)
  • Reverse osmosis systems
  • Activated carbon filters, UV filters, and more

Common water problems

Great quality water is, we believe, water that is not just free of harmful agents but water that smells, tastes, and looks as pure and clean as possible. That’s why Petersheim Brothers tests, and treats for, most common water problems.

PFAS

Calcium hard water is a common problem in southeast Pennsylvania. Water described as “hard” is high in dissolved minerals, specifically calcium and magnesium. Hard water is not a health risk, but it’s a nuisance because of mineral buildup on plumbing fixtures and in water heaters – not to mention causing hair and skin problems for many people. Learn More

Chlorine taste and smell

Chlorine and chloramine are disinfectants commonly used to kill water-borne microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses in a municipal water system. This water often has an unpleasant smell and taste. Some people also want chlorine removed from their water because of the health concerns about these chemicals. Learn More

Nitrates

Nitrate accumulates in agricultural watersheds where farmers spread inorganic fertilizers and animal manures on cropland. Nitrogen not taken up by crops can leach through the soil to groundwater and then flow to recharge areas or private wells. Residents in rural communities typically use on-lot septic systems and some homeowners rely on lawn fertilizers. These too can be sources of nitrate in drinking water.

Excessive nitrates are known to cause health problems for infants, small children, and certain adults. Learn More

Bacteria and microorganisms

Well water should be tested for Coliform Bacteria – an indicator of other harmful microorganisms that may be present in a contaminated well. Harmful microorganisms can lead to gastrointestinal problems and disease – especially for children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Learn More

High Iron

If you’ve been experiencing problems with a metallic taste, or a strange color or residue in your water, there’s a chance that your water has too much iron. Learn More

Sediment

Cloudy, discolored water can be caused by sediment. Learn More

Other impurities – arsenic, lead, and more

There are many harmful chemicals that can be present in your water that can cause health problems. We can test for and treat your water for these impurities. Learn More

How often should my water be tested?

It is recommended that well water be tested annually. More frequent testing is needed if there is:

  • Any change in the water’s taste, odor, or appearance
  • A problem such as a broken well cap or a new contamination source
  • Someone in your home has recurrent incidents of gastrointestinal illness
  • A pregnant woman, or an infant, lives in the home
  • A dangerous contaminant shows up in your neighbors’ water

Do I need water testing and treatment if my water comes from a municipal water system?

Yes! Often there are calcium hard water problems that are untreated in municipal water, which can cause problems with staining and mineral buildup. You may also notice a strong, unpleasant chlorine smell and taste in your water. Other impurities such as lead, heavy metals, rust and sediment may make their way into your home or business through aging pipes that are too often part of a municipal water system.
